Kangra painting is a renowned Pahari miniature art form that originated in the Kangra region of Himachal Pradesh, a former princely state that patronised the art form. It became prominent as the Basohli school of painting declined in the mid-18th century. It soon produced an extensive body of work, both in terms of subject matter and volume and the Kangra style became one of the most prominent schools within the Pahari painting tradition.

Anil Kumar Raina is an eighth-generation Pahari miniature artist from Makroti village near Kangra in Himachal Pradesh. He belongs to the Nainsukh family, whose descendants played a significant role in the development of the Pahari miniature tradition. Raina preserves this heritage through traditional techniques passed down through generations, creating detailed works inspired by themes including the Ramayana, Barahmasa, Nayika Bhed and Shringar Ras. He prepares his own natural pigments from stones and other materials and handmakes his brushes using squirrel hair, keeping the traditional methods of Pahari miniature painting alive.
