Art Form Details

The word Pattachitra means 'image on canvas' in Sanskrit, with 'parra' meaning canvas and 'chitra' meaning image or painting. Pattachitra originated in the Indian states of Orissa and West Bengal and dates back to around the 5th to 7th centuries. The main theme of this art form is mythology and most paintings are influenced by the Vaishnava cult. This is why Lord Krishna features prominently in these paintings.
