Art Form Details

The art of Pichwai originated as wall hangings placed behind the main deity in Krishna temples in Nathdwara. They narrate stories related to Lord Krishna. Gradually, secular themes were also incorporated into the Pichwai style of painting. Pichwais are colourful and intricate works of art with concealed symbolism in the artistic motifs. This distinct devotional art practice has passed from one generation to another and remains a fine example of spirituality in art.

Rajaram Sharma is a master Pichhwai and miniature painter from Udaipur, Rajasthan who learned the traditional art of Pichhwai under the guru-shishya parampara at Nathdwara. His richly detailed works are created using hand-ground mineral pigments and fine squirrel-hair brushes and depict Shrinathji, sacred narratives, festivals and the landscapes of Rajasthan. Alongside preserving this centuries-old tradition, Sharma brings a contemporary expression to the art through his exploration of Nature, local architecture and environmental concerns. He also runs Chitrashala, where he trains young artists and helps carry the Pichhwai tradition forward.
